Garfield County covers nearly 3000 square miles on Colorado's Western Slope. The County was founded in 1883 and named after the anti-slavery president President James A. Garfield who had been assassinated in office two years earlier.

The county runs from the high peaks of the Flat Top Wilderness to the Book Cliffs on the border of Utah.

The County Seat, Glenwood Springs, sits on the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers. The major thoroughfare for the County is Interstate 70 which runs along the Colorado River and enters Mesa County to the West of Parachute.

According to the 2010 Census, Garfield County has a population of 56,389. Principle towns in the county include Glenwood Springs 9,614, Rifle 9,172, Carbondale 6,427, New Castle 4,518, Battlement Mesa 4,471, Silt 2,930, and Parachute 1,085.
